That incredible $299 travel experience might not be quite so incredible once you see the actual price tag.

We've all seen them: travel videos promising incredible experiences for surprisingly low prices. A cross-country train journey for under $300. A luxury getaway for the price of a weekend dinner. A European adventure that supposedly costs less than your monthly car payment.

But when I started looking into the actual cost, the picture was quite different. The economy seating options I encountered were closer to $400–$500.

And there's another detail worth considering: you're potentially spending almost three days sitting in an economy seat.

That's a very different travel experience than a quick, inexpensive train getaway might suggest.

There are some trips that feel like vacations, and then there are trips that feel like an adventure.

Our Japan 2027 trip is definitely the second kind.

From Tokyo and traditional temples to magical theme parks, bamboo forests, hot springs, islands, Osaka, and a final day exploring Narita, this itinerary is designed to experience several very different sides of Japan in one unforgettable journey.

We’ll be traveling from Des Moines to Los Angeles and then on to Japan, spending more than two weeks exploring cities, countryside, pop-culture attractions, historic sites, and some places that are a little farther off the typical tourist path.

And because this is Starr Explorer, the goal isn't simply to check famous attractions off a list.

It's about the journey.

✈️ Day 1 — September 28, 2027

Des Moines → Los Angeles → Japan

Our adventure begins in Des Moines.

We'll fly from DSM to Los Angeles, then depart LAX for Japan later that same day.

The exact DSM-to-LAX flight will still need to be selected so that we have enough time to make the international connection.

Then comes the exciting part:

Japan, here we come! 🇯🇵

🇯🇵 Day 2 — September 29

Arriving in Tokyo

After crossing the Pacific and the International Date Line, we'll arrive at Narita International Airport at approximately 2:10 PM.

From there, we'll make our way into Tokyo by train.

3:00 PM — Depart for JR-East Hotel Mets Komagome
3:53 PM — Arrive at the hotel

Our first night will be at JR-East Hotel Mets Komagome, giving us a chance to settle in before the adventure really begins.

Tokyo is officially our home base.

♨️ Day 3 — September 30

A Day at Kusatsu Onsen

We'll be getting up early for one of Japan's most iconic experiences: an onsen.

At 6:15 AM, we'll depart for Kusatsu Onsen, arriving around 10:09 AM.

Kusatsu is known for its hot springs and traditional Japanese atmosphere, making this a completely different experience from the neon lights and skyscrapers of Tokyo.

We'll have several hours to explore and enjoy the area before beginning the journey back to Tokyo at 4:00 PM.

We'll arrive back at the hotel around 9:00 PM.

It's going to be a long day — but hopefully one of the most memorable ones.

🪄 Day 4 — October 1

Harry Potter Magic & Gotoku-ji

Today brings together two very different kinds of Japanese experiences.

We'll leave the hotel at 7:00 AM and arrive at The Making of Harry Potter Tour around 8:00 AM.

After spending the morning immersed in the world of Harry Potter, we'll head toward Gotoku-ji, the temple famous for its enormous collection of beckoning cat statues.

We'll depart for Gotoku-ji at 1:04 PM and arrive around 2:11 PM.

After exploring the temple, we'll head back toward our hotel, arriving around 5:08 PM.

Magic, cats, and Tokyo all in one day.

Not a bad combination.

🤖 Day 5 — October 2

Miraikan & Free Exploration

We'll start the morning with a visit to the Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, commonly known as Miraikan.

9:00 AM — Depart
10:00 AM — Arrive

We'll spend the morning exploring the museum before leaving around 3:00 PM.

The rest of the day is intentionally open.

No rigid schedule.

No rushing from one attraction to another.

Just time to wander Tokyo and see where the day takes us.

Kamakura: Temples & Bamboo

Our first stop is Kotoku-in, home to the famous Great Buddha.

We'll depart at 7:00 AM and arrive around 8:44 AM.

Then we'll continue on to Hokokuji Bamboo Forest, arriving around 10:37 AM.

After 11:00 AM, the schedule opens up for free exploration.

This should be one of those slower, atmospheric days — temples, greenery, traditional Japan, and time to simply take it all in.

🏯 Day 7 — October 4

Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba

It's another early morning.

We'll check out at 6:00 AM and depart at 6:30 AM for Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba.

We'll arrive around 10:00 AM.

This historic village experience should provide another change of scenery from the urban environments we've experienced so far.

At 4:00 PM, we'll continue on to Daiju Leaf Hotel, arriving around 10:00 PM.

It's a long travel day, but it moves us into the next chapter of the trip.

🎬 Day 8 — October 5

Ghibli Park

This is one of the days I'm especially excited about.

Ghibli Park.

We'll check out at 7:30 AM, depart at 8:00 AM, and arrive around 9:00 AM.

We'll spend the day exploring the world inspired by the films of Studio Ghibli before leaving at 5:00 PM.

From there, we'll travel to the Green Hill Hotel, arriving around 8:47 PM.

A full day in a world that feels like it came straight out of an animated film.

🏝️ Day 9 — October 6

Takaikamishima Island

Today takes us somewhere completely different.

We'll leave early for Habu Port, arriving around 7:15 AM.

At 8:00 AM, we'll board the ferry for Takaikamishima Island, arriving around 8:47 AM.

We'll have the day to explore the island before catching the 5:57 PM ferry back to Habu Port.

After returning to the mainland, we'll head back to the Green Hill Hotel.

Island adventure complete.

🌿 Day 10 — October 7

Tsujikawayama Park → Kobe

We'll check out at 6:30 AM and depart at 7:02 AM for Tsujikawayama Park.

We'll arrive around 9:36 AM and have the day to explore before heading toward Kobe.

At 4:21 PM, we'll depart for Remm Plus Kobe Sannomiya, arriving around 6:06 PM.

And just like that, we're entering another chapter of the trip:

Kobe.

🌳 Day 11 — October 8

Nijigen-no-Mori

Today we're visiting Nijigen-no-Mori, a theme park that brings popular fictional worlds into the real world.

We'll depart at 9:11 AM and arrive around 9:59 AM.

We'll spend most of the day exploring before heading back toward Kobe at 8:28 PM.

After several days of temples, islands, villages, and natural scenery, this is another opportunity to dive into Japan's love of immersive entertainment.

Kobe → Osaka

We'll check out of our Kobe hotel at 8:30 AM and head toward Osaka.

9:53 AM — Arrive at Holiday Inn Osaka Namba

With our bags taken care of, we'll officially begin our Osaka portion of the trip.

Exploring Osaka

Today is intentionally more relaxed.

We'll start with a visit to Mukashin, arriving around 8:57 AM.

Then, beginning around 9:30 AM, the rest of the day is open for exploring Osaka.

This is another one of those Starr Explorer days where the schedule leaves room for discovery.

Food.

Shopping.

Neighborhoods.

Unexpected finds.

Whatever catches our attention.

teamLab Biovortex → Narita

We'll check out of our Osaka hotel at 8:30 AM and head to teamLab Biovortex.

8:49 AM — Depart
9:55 AM — Arrive

After exploring teamLab, we'll begin our journey back toward the Tokyo area.

At 2:00 PM, we'll depart for Hotel Mystays Premier Narita, arriving around 6:36 PM.

We're getting close to the end of the adventure.

But there's still more to explore.

We'll start the morning with a visit to Shinimonogurui.

Afterward, we'll spend the afternoon exploring Narita City.

A Free Day in Japan

No alarms.

No trains to catch.

No attractions that we absolutely have to reach by a certain time.

Just a completely open day.

Explore. Wander. Eat. Shop. Discover.

After two weeks of moving around Japan, having one completely unplanned day feels like the perfect ending.

Eventually, every adventure has to end.

We'll check out at 9:00 AM and take the train to Narita Airport.

Fandom Travel: When the Stories We Love Become Places We Visit

Have you ever watched a movie and thought:

“I want to go there.”

Maybe it was a castle from your favorite fantasy film.

A little village from a television series.

A concert in another country.

A bookstore that inspired a beloved author.

A theme park where you can step into a fictional world.

Or maybe it was simply a landscape that looked so familiar from the pages of a book that you wanted to see it for yourself.

If you've ever planned a trip because of something you love, you already understand fandom travel.

What Is Fandom Travel?

Fandom travel is exactly what it sounds like: traveling because of something you're passionate about.

Movies.

Television.

Books.

Music.

Anime.

Video games.

Sports.

Comics.

Fantasy worlds.

Even specific characters or fictional universes.

One of the most recognizable forms is set-jetting—traveling to destinations you've seen in movies or television shows. And it has become a significant travel trend. Expedia's 2026 research found that 53% of travelers surveyed said their desire to take a screen-inspired trip had increased, while 81% of Gen Z and Millennial travelers surveyed said they plan getaways based on what they've seen on screen.

But fandom travel is bigger than filming locations.

Sometimes the destination isn't the attraction.

The event is.

A championship game, a famous stadium, a Grand Prix, the Olympics, or even a rivalry can become the reason you travel.

The Best Fandom Trips Don't Stop at the Fan Experience

This might be the most important part.

When you travel somewhere because of a fandom, it's easy to focus entirely on the thing that brought you there.

But don't forget where you are.

If a movie takes you to Scotland, explore Scotland.

If a book takes you to England, experience England.

If anime brings you to Japan, experience Japan.

Eat the food.

Learn the history.

Explore beyond the famous locations.

Because the fandom may be what gets you there...

…but the destination itself is what can make you fall in love with the place.

There's Something Wonderful About Meeting Other Fans

Fandom travel also creates something that ordinary sightseeing sometimes doesn't:

instant connection.

You're standing in line at an event and discover that the person next to you traveled from another country for the exact same reason.

You meet someone at a filming location who knows the same obscure detail you do.

You strike up a conversation with someone wearing a shirt featuring your favorite character.

You realize you already have something in common with a complete stranger.

That's one of my favorite things about travel.

Your Fandom Can Become Your Travel Inspiration

Maybe you've always wanted to visit New Zealand because of The Lord of the Rings.

Maybe Scotland is on your list because of Outlander.

Maybe Japan has been calling you because of anime, gaming, food, history or Japanese pop culture.

Maybe you want to visit London because of Harry Potter.

Maybe your dream trip involves a concert rather than a landmark.

Maybe your favorite book has inspired an entire road trip.

There is no wrong reason to travel.

If something makes you curious about the world, that's a good enough reason to go.

But Remember: Fiction Isn't Reality

There's one important thing to keep in mind when planning a fandom trip.

The place you see on screen isn't necessarily the place you'll experience in person.

Filmmakers use lighting, editing, special effects, set design and camera angles to create a particular feeling.

A fictional village may actually be several locations combined together.

A castle may look enormous on screen but be much smaller in person.

A peaceful filming location may be extremely busy with visitors.

And sometimes the real destination is completely different from what you imagined.

That's okay.

You're not traveling to recreate the movie.

You're traveling to experience something that inspired you.

Travel Because You Love Something

There are plenty of reasons to travel.

To relax.

To see famous landmarks.

To experience another culture.

To eat incredible food.

To escape your routine.

But sometimes the reason is much simpler.

You saw something.

You read something.

You heard something.

You fell in love with a story.

And somewhere along the way, that story made you curious about the real world.

That's a pretty wonderful reason to pack a suitcase.

Your favorite story might be fictional.

But the memories you make chasing it are very real.

So if you've ever looked at a screen and thought, “I need to go there,”...

Maybe you should.

The adventure might be waiting on the other side of the story.

Slow Travel: Why Seeing Less Can Help You Experience More

There is a certain kind of travel that leaves you exhausted.

At the end of the trip, you have hundreds of photographs.

But how much of the place do you actually remember?

That is where slow travel comes in.

Slow travel isn't about doing nothing. It isn't about giving up adventure or skipping the places you've dreamed about seeing.

It's about giving yourself enough time to actually experience them.

What Is Slow Travel?

At its simplest, slow travel means spending more time in fewer places and allowing yourself to experience a destination beyond its biggest attractions.

Instead of visiting five cities in five days, you might choose one city and stay for four or five nights.

Instead of rushing through a neighborhood between attractions, you might spend an afternoon wandering its streets.

The goal isn't to see everything.

The goal is to actually be somewhere.

Research into slow tourism describes it as a more flexible approach that emphasizes engagement with local communities, culture, nature, and the experience of being present.

And that idea is becoming increasingly relevant to the way people are traveling today.

Slow Travel Doesn't Mean Boring Travel

This is probably the biggest misconception.

Slow travel doesn't mean sitting in a hotel all day.

You can still have an incredible adventure.

You can hike.

You can ride trains.

You can explore castles.

You can visit museums.

You can eat your way through a city.

You can take a road trip.

You can even visit some of the world's most famous attractions.

The difference is how you experience them.

Instead of asking:

“How many things can I see?”

slow travel asks:

“How deeply can I experience this place?”

That's a very different way of looking at a vacation.

The Magic of Having a Home Base

One of the easiest ways to try slow travel is to choose a home base.

Find a town or neighborhood you love and stay there for several nights.

On the first day, you're a visitor.

By the third day, you might know which café opens early.

You might recognize the person working at the little shop down the street.

You might discover a bakery you never saw mentioned online.

You might figure out the easiest train route.

You might find yourself walking somewhere simply because you enjoyed the walk the day before.

Those aren't necessarily the moments that make it onto a bucket list.

But they're often the moments that become the memories you talk about years later.

Leave Some Space in the Itinerary

One of the hardest things for travelers to do is leave a day—or even an afternoon—completely open.

We're so used to maximizing our vacations that an empty afternoon can feel like wasted time.

Travel doesn't always have to be about getting from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible.

Sometimes Point A to Point B is the experience.

You aren't simply watching the landscape disappear outside a window.

Eat Like You're Staying, Not Visiting

Food might be one of the easiest ways to slow down.

Instead of treating meals as something you have to squeeze between attractions, make them part of the experience.

Visit a local market.

Try something you've never eaten before.

Eat at a neighborhood restaurant.

Order something you can't pronounce.

Sit with your coffee a little longer.

Ask a local what they recommend.

Food can tell you an enormous amount about a place—and sometimes the best travel memories begin with something as simple as sitting down for a meal.

Talk to People

Slow travel creates opportunities for something that can be difficult to schedule:

human connection.

You might have a conversation with the owner of a small shop.

A bartender might tell you about a restaurant tourists don't know about.

Someone on a train might recommend a town you hadn't considered visiting.

A local guide might tell you a story about a place that completely changes the way you see it.

These interactions aren't always guaranteed.

But when they happen, they're often the moments that make a destination feel personal.

You Don't Have to Travel Far to Travel Slowly

Slow travel doesn't require an international flight.

You can practice it close to home.

Pick a nearby town you've never really explored.

Spend the night.

Walk instead of driving when you can.

Find a local restaurant.

Visit a museum.

Talk to someone who lives there.

Explore without trying to accomplish anything.

You might be surprised by how much there is to discover within a few hours of home.

And sometimes, slowing down locally can change the way you approach travel everywhere else.

Slow Travel Isn't About Doing Less

It's about experiencing more of what you're doing.

That's the part I love most about the idea.

A fast-paced trip might give you a long list of places you've visited.

A slower trip might give you a handful of stories.

The little café you found by accident.

The stranger who gave you directions.

The train ride where you watched the landscape change.

The restaurant where you had the best meal of your trip.

The quiet morning when you had nowhere you needed to be.

The street you walked down three times because you liked it.

Those moments don't always look impressive on an itinerary.

But they're often the moments that make a destination feel real.

So, Should Your Next Trip Be Slower?

Maybe.

You don't have to completely abandon your travel style.

You don't have to spend two weeks in one town.

You don't have to skip the famous attractions.

You don't even have to call yourself a “slow traveler.”

Instead, try making one small change.

Stay an extra night.

Leave one afternoon open.

Take the train.

Eat somewhere recommended by a local.

Japan 2027: An Epic Autumn Adventure Through Japan

September 28–October 14, 2027

There are some trips that feel like vacations, and then there are trips that feel like an adventure.

Our Japan 2027 trip is definitely the second kind.

And because this is Starr Explorer, the goal isn't simply to check famous attractions off a list.

It's about the journey.

✈️ Day 1 — September 28, 2027

Des Moines → Los Angeles → Japan

Our adventure begins in Des Moines.

We'll fly from DSM to Los Angeles, then depart LAX for Japan later that same day.

🇯🇵 Day 2 — September 29

Arriving in Tokyo

After crossing the Pacific and the International Date Line, we'll arrive at Narita International Airport at approximately 2:10 PM.

From there, we'll make our way into Tokyo by train.

3:00 PM — Depart for JR-East Hotel Mets Komagome
3:53 PM — Arrive at the hotel

Our first night will be at JR-East Hotel Mets Komagome, giving us a chance to settle in before the adventure really begins.

Tokyo is officially our home base.

♨️ Day 3 — September 30

A Day at Kusatsu Onsen

We'll be getting up early for one of Japan's most iconic experiences: an onsen.

At 6:15 AM, we'll depart for Kusatsu Onsen, arriving around 10:09 AM.

Kusatsu is known for its hot springs and traditional Japanese atmosphere, making this a completely different experience from the neon lights and skyscrapers of Tokyo.

We'll have several hours to explore and enjoy the area before beginning the journey back to Tokyo at 4:00 PM.

We'll arrive back at the hotel around 9:00 PM.

It's going to be a long day — but hopefully one of the most memorable ones.

🪄 Day 4 — October 1

Harry Potter Magic & Gotoku-ji

Today brings together two very different kinds of Japanese experiences.

We'll leave the hotel at 7:00 AM and arrive at The Making of Harry Potter Tour around 8:00 AM.

After spending the morning immersed in the world of Harry Potter, we'll head toward Gotoku-ji, the temple famous for its enormous collection of beckoning cat statues.

We'll depart for Gotoku-ji at 1:04 PM and arrive around 2:11 PM.

After exploring the temple, we'll head back toward our hotel, arriving around 5:08 PM.

Magic, cats, and Tokyo all in one day.

Not a bad combination.

🤖 Day 5 — October 2

Miraikan & Free Exploration

We'll start the morning with a visit to the Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, commonly known as Miraikan.

9:00 AM — Depart
10:00 AM — Arrive

We'll spend the morning exploring the museum before leaving around 3:00 PM.

The rest of the day is intentionally open.

No rigid schedule.

No rushing from one attraction to another.

Just time to wander Tokyo and see where the day takes us.

🎋 Day 6 — October 3

Kamakura: Temples & Bamboo

Today we're heading out of Tokyo toward Kamakura.

Our first stop is Kotoku-in, home to the famous Great Buddha.

We'll depart at 7:00 AM and arrive around 8:44 AM.

Then we'll continue on to Hokokuji Bamboo Forest, arriving around 10:37 AM.

After 11:00 AM, the schedule opens up for free exploration.

This should be one of those slower, atmospheric days — temples, greenery, traditional Japan, and time to simply take it all in.

🏯 Day 7 — October 4

Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba

It's another early morning.

We'll check out at 6:00 AM and depart at 6:30 AM for Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba.

We'll arrive around 10:00 AM.

This historic village experience should provide another change of scenery from the urban environments we've experienced so far.

At 4:00 PM, we'll continue on to Daiju Leaf Hotel, arriving around 10:00 PM.

It's a long travel day, but it moves us into the next chapter of the trip.

🎬 Day 8 — October 5

Ghibli Park

This is one of the days I'm especially excited about.

Ghibli Park.

We'll check out at 7:30 AM, depart at 8:00 AM, and arrive around 9:00 AM.

We'll spend the day exploring the world inspired by the films of Studio Ghibli before leaving at 5:00 PM.

From there, we'll travel to the Green Hill Hotel, arriving around 8:47 PM.

A full day in a world that feels like it came straight out of an animated film.

🏝️ Day 9 — October 6

Takaikamishima Island

Today takes us somewhere completely different.

We'll leave early for Habu Port, arriving around 7:15 AM.

At 8:00 AM, we'll board the ferry for Takaikamishima Island, arriving around 8:47 AM.

We'll have the day to explore the island before catching the 5:57 PM ferry back to Habu Port.

After returning to the mainland, we'll head back to the Green Hill Hotel.

7:15 PM — Arrive at the hotel.

Island adventure complete.

🌿 Day 10 — October 7

Tsujikawayama Park → Kobe

We'll check out at 6:30 AM and depart at 7:02 AM for Tsujikawayama Park.

We'll arrive around 9:36 AM and have the day to explore before heading toward Kobe.

At 4:21 PM, we'll depart for Remm Plus Kobe Sannomiya, arriving around 6:06 PM.

And just like that, we're entering another chapter of the trip:

Kobe.

🌳 Day 11 — October 8

Nijigen-no-Mori

Today we're visiting Nijigen-no-Mori, a theme park that brings popular fictional worlds into the real world.

We'll depart at 9:11 AM and arrive around 9:59 AM.

We'll spend most of the day exploring before heading back toward Kobe at 8:28 PM.

After several days of temples, islands, villages, and natural scenery, this is another opportunity to dive into Japan's love of immersive entertainment.

Kobe → Osaka

We'll check out of our Kobe hotel at 8:30 AM and head toward Osaka.

Exploring Osaka

Today is intentionally more relaxed.

We'll start with a visit to Mukashin, arriving around 8:57 AM.

Then, beginning around 9:30 AM, the rest of the day is open for exploring Osaka.

This is another one of those Starr Explorer days where the schedule leaves room for discovery.

Food.

Shopping.

Neighborhoods.

Unexpected finds.

Whatever catches our attention.

teamLab Biovortex → Narita

We'll check out of our Osaka hotel at 8:30 AM and head to teamLab Biovortex.

After exploring teamLab, we'll begin our journey back toward the Tokyo area.

At 2:00 PM, we'll depart for Hotel Mystays Premier Narita, arriving around 6:36 PM.

We're getting close to the end of the adventure.

We'll start the morning with a visit to Shinimonogurui.

Narnia in Two Seasons: The Ultimate Journey Through Czechia & New Zealand

What if you could step through the wardrobe… and come out on the other side of the world?

For fans of The Chronicles of Narnia, the magic of the films has always been more than talking animals, enchanted forests, ancient castles, and epic battles. It is the feeling of discovering a world that somehow looks familiar and completely impossible at the same time.

And while Narnia itself exists in another world, you can visit some remarkably Narnian places right here on Earth.

For this adventure, we're going even bigger.

Our journey begins in wintery Czechia, where snow-covered forests, towering sandstone formations, and mysterious rock cities create the perfect atmosphere for the White Witch. Then we cross the globe to summer in New Zealand, following the landscapes used to bring Narnia to life on screen.

Two countries.

Two seasons.

One seriously epic adventure.

🦁 The Ultimate Narnia Adventure

This trip combines two very different sides of Narnia.

In Czechia, we'll chase the darker, colder atmosphere of Narnia — misty forests, frozen landscapes, towering rock formations, and dramatic sandstone corridors that feel as though they could hide a faun, a White Witch, or a very inconvenient wolf.

Then we head to New Zealand, where the scenery becomes enormous.

Wild coastlines.

Turquoise water.

Ancient-looking mountains.

Rolling green valleys.

Massive rock formations.

And landscapes so spectacular that it is easy to understand why filmmakers chose New Zealand to represent the world of Narnia.

The best part?

We're doing it in February, when Czechia is experiencing winter while New Zealand is enjoying summer.

It feels almost like traveling between two different versions of Narnia.

🇨🇿 Part One: Narnia in Winter

Prague → Adršpach → Tisá → Bohemian Switzerland

Our European adventure begins in Prague.

Prague itself isn't a Narnia filming location, but it makes the perfect gateway into the story. Medieval streets, gothic architecture, old stone bridges, castle towers, and winding alleyways provide an appropriately magical opening chapter.

Spend the first day exploring:

Old Town Square
The Astronomical Clock
Charles Bridge
Prague Castle
St. Vitus Cathedral
Malá Strana

Then leave the city behind.

The real Narnia atmosphere begins when we head north.

🏰 Adršpach: The Rock City

Imagine walking through a frozen forest and suddenly finding yourself surrounded by enormous sandstone towers.

That's Adršpach.

The Adršpach-Teplice Rocks are one of the most otherworldly landscapes in Czechia. Narrow passages wind between towering rock formations, while forests and winter weather transform the landscape into something that feels much closer to fantasy than reality.

In summer, the rocks are beautiful.

In winter, they become something else entirely.

Snow clings to the sandstone.

The forest becomes quiet.

Mist can settle between the formations.

And suddenly you're not sightseeing anymore.

You're exploring Narnia.

Spend two nights in the area so there's time to experience both Adršpach Rock City and the neighboring Teplice Rocks without rushing.

❄️ The White Witch Atmosphere

This section of the journey is all about the darker side of Narnia.

Think:

snow-covered forests + sandstone towers + frozen streams + fog + ancient rock corridors.

It's the perfect setting for a winter fantasy adventure.

And February gives us the possibility of exactly the atmosphere we're hoping for — although, as with any winter trip, snow conditions are ultimately up to Mother Nature.

That's part of the adventure.

🪨 Tisá Rocks

Next, we'll continue toward Tisá, home to another extraordinary sandstone landscape.

The Tisá Rocks are famous for their dramatic formations and maze-like trails.

Walking between the cliffs feels like entering a natural fortress.

The rocks create unexpected doorways, corridors, overlooks, and hidden spaces.

It's easy to imagine this landscape belonging to another world.

And if the weather cooperates?

Snow makes everything even more magical.

🌲 Bohemian Switzerland

Our final Czech destination is Bohemian Switzerland National Park.

Despite the name, this isn't Switzerland.

It's one of Czechia's most dramatic natural landscapes, filled with sandstone cliffs, deep forests, ravines, and enormous rock formations.

One of the area's most recognizable landmarks is Pravčická Gate, a spectacular natural sandstone arch.

The landscape is particularly atmospheric in winter.

Bare trees.

Dark forests.

Rock walls disappearing into mist.

Snow beneath your boots.

It feels mysterious, ancient, and wonderfully cinematic.

This is the point in the journey where the White Witch's Narnia feels especially close.

✈️ From Winter to Summer

And then comes the truly ridiculous part of this adventure.

We leave winter behind…

…and fly to the other side of the planet.

Within a matter of days, we'll go from snowy European forests to beaches, mountains, and the summer landscapes of New Zealand.

It's one of the strangest and most exciting things about planning a trip like this.

We aren't just changing countries.

We're changing seasons.

🇳🇿 Part Two: Narnia in Summer

Auckland → Coromandel → Christchurch → South Island → Queenstown

New Zealand is where the adventure becomes enormous.

The country's landscapes were used extensively to create Middle-earth in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, but New Zealand also provided some of the spectacular scenery seen in The Chronicles of Narnia.

And unlike our Czechia adventure, this half of the trip happens during the warmth and long days of Southern Hemisphere summer.

🌊 Auckland & Woodhill Forest

Our New Zealand adventure begins in Auckland.

After arriving, we'll keep things relaxed before heading out toward Woodhill Forest.

The forest and surrounding Auckland region provide a completely different visual language from the dramatic South Island landscapes we'll encounter later.

We'll also visit Muriwai Beach, where the forest meets the wild Pacific coastline.

It's a great first taste of New Zealand's combination of rugged wilderness and enormous skies.

🌊 Coromandel: Cair Paravel

Then we head toward the Coromandel Peninsula.

And this is where the trip gets seriously exciting.

Cathedral Cove

Cathedral Cove is one of the most recognizable Narnia filming locations in New Zealand.

The enormous natural rock arch opens onto a beautiful beach surrounded by cliffs and turquoise water.

For fans of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, this is the place to stop and think:

"Wait… I know this place."

In the film, the landscape helped become Cair Paravel, the castle and home of the Pevensies.

Standing there in the real world is a strange experience.

Because the landscape doesn't need CGI to feel magical.

It already does.

We'll aim to visit early in the day, when the area is quieter and the light is beautiful.

Access to Cathedral Cove can change because of weather and geological conditions, so this is one location we'll want to verify shortly before the trip.

🏔️ The South Island Begins

From Auckland, we'll fly south to Christchurch and begin the road-trip portion of our South Island adventure.

And this is where the scenery gets wild.

Our route takes us through some of the landscapes that made New Zealand such an iconic fantasy-film destination.

⚔️ Flock Hill: The Great Battle

From Christchurch, we'll drive toward Flock Hill.

This enormous landscape is one of the most memorable Narnia filming locations in New Zealand.

It's where the filmmakers created the setting for the great battle sequences in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

The scale of the landscape is incredible.

Wide valleys.

Huge mountains.

Rocky terrain.

Endless sky.

Standing there makes it much easier to understand how filmmakers could transform the location into an enormous fantasy battlefield.

It's one thing to see the scene on a screen.

It's another thing entirely to stand where it was filmed.

🪨 Castle Hill / Kura Tāwhiti

Nearby is Castle Hill, also known as Kura Tāwhiti.

The enormous limestone formations rise from the landscape like the ruins of an ancient civilization.

Even without the Narnia connection, this is one of those places where you find yourself constantly stopping to take photographs.

Walk among the rocks.

Explore the formations.

Look for unusual shapes.

And, naturally, imagine what kind of creature might be hiding behind the next one.

🦁 Elephant Rocks: Aslan's Camp

Next comes one of my favorite stops on the entire adventure:

Elephant Rocks.

This remarkable landscape of enormous limestone formations was used as Aslan's Camp in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

It's one of those locations where the movie magic becomes tangible.

The rocks are enormous.

The landscape is expansive.

And when you know what you're looking at, your brain immediately starts connecting the real landscape with the scenes from the film.

This is absolutely a location for taking your time.

Walk.

Explore.

Photograph everything.

And, preferably, spend at least a few minutes simply standing there and taking it all in.

🐧 Oamaru & The Wild Coast

After Elephant Rocks, we'll continue toward Oamaru before turning south.

From here, the trip becomes less about specific filming locations and more about experiencing the wild landscapes that make New Zealand feel like a fantasy world in its own right.

We'll explore the southern coastline, including:

Moeraki Boulders
Nugget Point
Purakaunui Falls
Catlins Forest Park
Curio Bay
Cathedral Caves, if accessible

This section of the trip is all about slowing down.

Waterfalls.

Forests.

Cliffs.

Wild beaches.

Lighthouses.

🌊 The Catlins

The Catlins may not be a major Narnia filming stop, but they absolutely belong on a Narnia-inspired road trip.

The region feels remote and wonderfully untamed.

It's the kind of place where you can drive for stretches without seeing much civilization at all.

That's exactly what we're looking for.

Because sometimes the best part of a fantasy trip isn't finding the exact filming location.

It's finding somewhere that makes you feel like the movie could have been filmed there.

The Catlins does that beautifully.

🏔️ Queenstown

Eventually, the road leads us to Queenstown.

After days of driving through forests, coastlines, and remote landscapes, Queenstown feels like arriving at a civilization again.

But the scenery is still spectacular.

Lake Wakatipu.

Mountain ranges.

Clear blue water.

Dramatic skies.

And the Southern Alps surrounding everything.

We'll use Queenstown as our base for exploring one of the most magical areas of the entire trip.

🏔️ Glenorchy & Paradise

If there's one place where I would tell a Narnia fan to slow down and really soak everything in, it's Glenorchy and Paradise.

The drive from Queenstown follows Lake Wakatipu before entering an increasingly dramatic landscape.

Eventually, the roads lead into the wilderness around Glenorchy and Paradise.

This is the kind of landscape that doesn't look real.

Mountains rise from the valleys.

Rivers wind through the wilderness.

Forests cover the hillsides.

Clouds move through the peaks.

And everything feels enormous.

Spend a full day here.

Depending on your interests, that could mean:

Scenic walks
Photography
Dart River experiences
Horseback riding
Scenic flights
Picnic stops
Exploring the Glenorchy waterfront
Simply finding a quiet viewpoint and doing absolutely nothing

Because after this much driving, doing nothing for an afternoon might actually be the most magical activity of all.

After nearly three weeks of chasing Narnia across two countries and two seasons, we'll finish back in Queenstown.

This final day is intentionally flexible.

Maybe we'll ride the gondola.

Maybe we'll explore Arrowtown.

Maybe we'll spend the afternoon beside Lake Wakatipu.

Maybe we'll have one last scenic adventure.

Or maybe we'll simply find somewhere beautiful, order dinner, and start realizing that the adventure is almost over.

And that's when the real magic of a trip like this starts to sink in.

You didn't just visit a filming location.

You walked through landscapes that inspired filmmakers.

You stood beneath ancient rock formations.

You explored winter forests.

You crossed the world.

You experienced summer on the other side of the planet.

And for a little while…

🌉 Local Treasures: A Day at the Bridges of Madison County

Today I finally got to have a day out with my hubby! We decided to check out something within an hour of home that we’ve been talking about forever: The Bridges of Madison County near Winterset, IA. Make your first stop at the Madison County Chamber & Welcome Center at 73 W Jefferson St, Winterset, IA. I am terrible with names but the lady working there today was super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Their hours are Tuesday-Friday 10am-3pm.

Exploring Winterset City Park

What started as a bridge hunt turned into a terrific tour of Winterset City Park. It is a beautiful spot with so much history tucked away inside:

Cutler-Donahoe Covered Bridge: This bridge dates back to 1871! It was originally built by Eli Cox over the North River in Bevington but has called the park home since 1970.
Clark Tower: Built in 1926 by descendants of one of the county's first pioneer families, this 25-foot limestone monument offers a stunning view of the Middle River valley. You can hike, bike, or drive the 2-mile round trip to get there—the road is a bit narrow with tight turns, but it's completely worth the view.
The Winterset Rotary Maze: This isn't just any hedge maze; it was designed by Robert Harvey, an ISU professor of Landscape Architecture. My husband and I went different ways at the start and somehow reached the center sundial at the exact same time!
Park Perks: We also noticed a bocce ball pitch, fun chainsaw carvings, a campground, and a playground with a slide that’s actually a replica of Clark Tower.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for the "walkways"—there is a wide path set on a loop that looks like a sidewalk but is actually designed for cars!

The Famous "Book Cover" Bridge

On our way home, we took the "no highways" route and found the Cedar Covered Bridge (built in 1883). If it looks familiar, that's because it was featured on the cover of the book The Bridges of Madison County! It’s also the only bridge of the group that you can still actually drive through. It’s set on a lovely loop with covered picnic areas.

Final Thoughts

I highly recommend driving the Bridges of Madison County Scenic Byway. The trees are still a little bare right now, but in full spring or fall, this drive would be absolutely breathtaking.
